Once upon a time there were three young ladies who, despite their fortunes, had been on the Marriage Mart a bit too long. They were known as the “Spinster Heiresses” . . .
He’s inherited a title, but not a penny to speak of, so the Earl of Rochdale knows he must find a wife—preferably one tolerably pretty and good-tempered, but definitely wealthy, and willing to exchange her fortune for his family name.

His choice: Leonie Charnock, one of the season’s “Spinster Heiresses.” Years before, the earl had saved the dark-eyed beauty’s reputation, and she is still breathtakingly lovely, leading Rochdale to hope that their marriage will be more than in name only.
However, Leonie doesn’t want to be anyone’s wife. Nearly destroyed by the secrets in her past, Leonie agrees to their union with one condition: there will be a wedding but no bedding. But it’s a condition the new Countess Rochdale isn’t sure even she can keep . . .

(Warning: Neither the author nor the publisher saw fit to make the reader aware that this story has some moments that might act as a trigger if you have dealt with any kind of physical or sexual violence. It also deals with the struggles with certain addictions.) If Ever I Should Love You, Book 1 of the Spinster Heiresses series, was about Roman Gilchrist, who had recently inherited the title of Earl of Rochdale insolvent earldom of Rochdale (thanks to his late uncle's gambling debts), and Miss Leonie Charnock, a young woman of 23-years of age who had been on the marriage mart for 3 seasons and was considered by the ton to be a "spinster heiress". Roman, knowing the only way to save his earldom was to marry an heiress with a large dowry, was given the names of three such ladies...all spinsters who had seen 3 seasons on the marriage mart. One of the names stood out to him; that of Leonie. Six years earlier, when she was 17 and lived in Calcutta, India, he had saved her reputation, but it had cost him greatly. Upon hearing her name, he determined that she would now pay for what her rescue had cost him. There were several characters in this book that were awesome, but there were also those that could be considered villains(nesses) or just outright bad people. The author knew what she was doing when she created these characters and she probably knew how much the reader would want to do bodily harm to them. There was a tremendous amount of angst and drama in this story, but there was also a great deal of heartache and pain. There wasn't much humor though. It would have been nice to have humor sprinkled throughout the story to lighten the mood which, to be honest, was quite thick most of the time. This was not a light, romantic love story. It was a dark, moody story that had a touch of love. The chemistry, though it was there, was almost tragic in nature. While it was there, it was almost like wading through a bog. The struggles these two had were more than many married couples would normally have to endure. The trials they had to deal with were so rough at times it was difficult for the reader not to cry. To "watch" them bravely plow through one thing after another was heart-wrenching and yet glorious at the same time. This book definitely earned 5 stars...and a place with the Keeper for the Shelves collection.
