Five Days With A Duke, the 5th and final book in The Heart of a Scandal series, was about His Grace Connell Wordsworth, the Duke of Renaud, and Lady Constance Brandley, daughter to the Earl and Countess of Tipden. Ten years prior, Connell had been betrothed to Lady Emilia Aberdeen. However, even though he had loved her, he had chosen to end their engagement due to circumstances beyond his control. Now, he had once again lost everything he had ever held dear. Choosing to live alone, without friends, family, and only two servants, he returned to a London home that would have no memories that would bring about any more loss. For six years, Constance had watched everything she loved dwindle and disappear. Her beloved brother Hadden had vanished, then her parents, with their finances depleted, had started selling off all their possessions to cover unknown debts to the point that their home was all but barren save for one room in which they entertained...IF they ever entertained. (No one of the Ton was aware of just how bad things had become...and they seriously hoped to keep it that way for as long as they could.) For her part, Constance believed the money had gone to finance her brother's travels around the world...wherever that might be. But now, the last thing she had that brought her any enjoyment in life, her precious cello, was taken from her, bringing her to the final breaking point. When her oldest and dearest friend Amelia, the Marchioness Mulgrave, learned of her dire straits, she offered her a solution, which, in her desperation, Constance grasped with both hands. Having received a message from an unknown writer asking for help for her former guardian, Constance felt a tug at her heartstrings to offer a bit of assistance. Having followed the directions given in the missive, she arrived at the home of Connell. Upon recognizing each other, their first reactions were that of disdain and dismay. However, Constance was determined to fulfill what she determined to be a responsibility to the unidentified letter writer to help in any way she could. Therefore, she was intent to see it through. Connell, upon recognizing the lady, at first thought he was being persecuted by his former betrothed...except that would have meant the lady still had feelings for him after all those years, which he knew was not the case. The longer he stayed in the company of Constance, though, the more intrigued he became. When he learned the reason for her visit...at least the one she gave him to cover up the truth of the matter...he decided to give the time to garner the information she wanted from him, but no more than five days. When Connell learned why she was truly visiting him was one of the worst days ever...for both of them had now truly become lost. The feelings they had started developing for each other were crushed under the weight of Connell's anger. Neither expected the attraction that had been instantaneous or the loss they would feel when they were no longer together. Angst and drama were not really high in this book, although they were both quite apparent. It was more of a development of a friendship that took twists and turns as it grew stronger. Frustration, humor, and regret were also amongst the feelings between the two main characters. The storyline was well developed, but it lacked a bit of continuity at times. It tended to meander a bit away from the main reason for being written. The characters were fleshed out, but at times they were a bit unbelievable. Constance didn't the idea of an 1800s lady, but that was what made her character come alive. She was one of a kind that didn't want to submit to the "model" lady of the time. Connell was a more believable character. He fit what most believe the "lord of the manor" who has met with one disappointment after another was truly like in the 1800s: surly, withdrawn, haughty, wanting nothing to do with Society. This book was the perfect ending to a most wonderful and enjoyable series. It most definitely deserved a five-star rating and to be added to the Keeper for the Shelves collection.
