An Inconvenient War, Book 3 of the Ladies of Lytchley series, was about the Honorable Reginald "Reggie" Darrow, heir of Lord Darrow, Viscount of Loughton, and Miss Penelope Pratt, daughter to Mr. Aloysius E. Pratt, merchant. Though Reggie was never given a reason to grow up and be a man, he yearned for some form of responsibility. Then his father purchased him a commission in the calvary and sent him off to fight the war. Before leaving to join his regiment, Reggie stopped by Penelope's home to let her know what was happening. They both agreed to keep in touch via letters. When Penelope learned that Reggie had been injured in battle, she immediately traveled to where he was in order to help nurse him. Before leaving London, she sent letters to his family and left a note for her father stating where she was going and why. When his parents showed up at the hospital, they made it known they did not need her there. This was an excellent ending to the series. There was so much drama, angst, heartache, fear, sadness, joy...the whole gamut of emotions in this book. There was only a touch of humor and even less passion. But there was a great deal of intrigue, twists, and turns to keep the heart pumping and to make the reader want to scream and yell at the two dunderheads that were called the Hero and Heroine. While the characters were well developed and mature, they sure didn't know how to stand up for themselves against those who would keep them apart There was such a lack of backbone for so long that I nearly put the book down on multiple occasions. However, I'm glad I stayed with it, for there were quite a few surprises that caused a tremendous amount of anxiety over what could possibly happen next. Definitely worthy of a five-star rating and to be added to the Keeper of the Shelves collection.
